My Profile

Professional Background

BSC Hons in Chemistry: Registered teacher. But I have been teaching maths only now since 1982. I really enjoy mahts but I must admit it's not as intrinsically interesting to students as chemistry is. In chemistry you can do some pretty exciting experiments that capture their interest.

My Interests

  • to learn to become an effective online teacher to distance students, to continue to learn more about web 2.0 and how to make effective use of it.

Health and wellbeing, tramping, gardening, reading, qi gong, music and people. What a wonderful opportunity this is to meet a whole range of different people!

My Reflection

I'd like to say a big thank you to Nellie, Patricia and Wayne for holding my hand as I worked through this workshop. I haven't quite finished yet. I'm too tired this evening to make progress with the structure templates. I've read the info and think it is making sense but want to spend more time on that before I start experimenting. I may as well think about the structure of my project before I do that activity. I have thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to learn more about wiki syntax. My first experiences with wikis were in wikispaces and there I didn't have to think about syntax, though no doubt I can do more there now too, now that I understand the syntax so much better. This course has been a timely activity for me. I am an e-lead teacher at our school at present and I'm impressed by the huge headway with my learning I have already made this year. I have learned so much! It has been a great journey! I'm looking forward to the next steps. The amazing thing is, I have no idea what I will be learning in a few months time as doors keep opening as I get introduced to new web 2.0 tools, and ideas!

It has been great having the wiki medium so effectively modelled as a teaching tool. I loved the speedy feedback and help. I think the templates give a very clean, clear layout and look great. I'd love to try using a wiki to teach students, but will have to find some students to do it with. My students at present are mostly from a lower socioeconomic grouping and many have no access to computers, let alone the net. However, it is possibe I can find some to start out with at the beginning of 2010. Perhaps since I am so enthusiastic I will be given a few handpicked students to experiment with?!

I will continue learning more in Wikispaces, but will probably not try to work quite so quickly from here on as I have found it fairly intensive after a long day at work much of it spent in front of a computer. I would like to be a facilitator in time, but will probably wait until I have retired from my job before I do that. This time is getting remarkably close! However, I will keep developing skills and familiarity with the syntax meanwhile. Once more, many thanks to you and to my wikineighbours!--Antico
