Read Chapters 3.5 in Business Communication for Success, and Chapter 4.1 in Stand Up, Speak Out. Chapter 3.5 in your text explains how active listening and reading support effective communication, and gives tips on how to apply active listening skills when discussing difficult subjects. The Chapter 4.1 reading in Stand Up, Speak Out describes the difference between listening and hearing, and various benefits of active listening.

Recommended: Do exercises 2 and 3 in Chapter 3.5, which ask you to practice active reading skills, and observe interruptions in a conversation situation.
