Read Chapter 3.3 in Business Communication for Success. This brief reading discusses individual differences that can limit how well we communicate with others. People select different aspects of messages according to interests, familiarity, and relevance. Quality of thinking is also directly related how well we pay attention and listen. The central idea is that becoming an effective communicator requires awareness of your own perceptual set, as well as learning to see issues and experiences from multiple perspectives.

Recommended: Do the three chapter exercises. The first exercise invites you to explore perception differences about a film in your personal social circle. When you complete this exercise, post a summary of your findings in the WENotes. How are others’ experiences of the film similar, or different, to your own? The second two exercises ask you to reflect on personal experiences of communication gaps.
