Read Chapter 4 Introduction and 4.1 in Business Communication for Success. These readings discuss differences and similarities between oral and written communication. In business messages, it helps to think in terms of writing for the ear or writing for the eye. In both contexts, effective written communication depends on knowing your subject and audience, and presenting clear, concise messages. Both contexts also rely on the eight essential elements of communication, and aspects of verbal communication in what you say, and non-verbal communication in how you say it. However, in oral communication, key nonverbal cues include voice tone, facial expression, and body language; while in written communication, phrasing, image, and even font choice stand out more. The biggest difference is that face-to-face communication usually allows immediate feedback, while written communication is usually asynchronous, so requires even more care to support message clarity.

Also, do the three chapter exercises, which ask you to construct scenarios for the eight essential elements of communication, analyze a business website ‘About Us’ page, and then create your own marketing message.
