Read Chapter 2.5 in Business Communication for Success. One key to communication is capturing and holding audience attention. This reading describes how to use visual, signpost, preview, review, and repetition strategies to emphasize your message, or key parts of your message. The ‘look’ of written messages also influences message interpretation. Font, paragraph length, graphics, and colour choices set a perceptual tone. For example, look at how the semantic triangle is used to illustrate non-verbal communication in the Strategic Use of Visuals Table. What other ways could you apply the semantic triangle to find common ground before deciding how to emphasise your messages? Tip: Review the intercultural semantics example in Chapter 2.1.

Recommended: Do the the four chapter exercises, which invite you to explore the use of visuals, signposts and symbols in various media messages. Practice your writing skills by producing a clear, concise summary of your findings on how these strategies helped you, as the audience, understand the messages.
