Writing for Business Success/Delivering your message/Effective Message Design

Read Chapter 2.2 in Business Communication for Success. This reading discusses primary (intentional), secondary (unintentional), and auxiliary (intentional and unintentional) messages. It also describes effective communication as audience-centred. In message design, this means attending to the five key parts of the attention statement, introduction, body, conclusion, and residual message.

Recommended: Do all the chapter exercises. The first three ask you to reflect on primary and auxiliary messages. The fourth invites you to think critically about how language affects self-concept, and research an example. Tip: Explore language barriers. The fifth exercise encourages you to practice writing skills by analysing an article or op-ed from a major media source using the five-part message format.

Please share your responses to either of the last two exercises in the WENotes feed below.
