Open Learning MOOCs can give everyone a place to learn and teach almost anything. There are kids everywhere who need to learn to read and do fractions. They have smartphones and cell service but no teachers or books. Others look to learn something of personal interest or to review topics covered in school. The courses are more than self-study web sites. There are discussions, questions and suggestions with others as well as guidelines and resources. OpenLearning environment encourages active, engaged, inspired, involved courses and is free for anyone to teach public and private courses.



K-2 Math and Reading Buddies k2mrb
Kids in grades 4-6 are helping K-1 "buddies" with reading and math. Here are some of their guidelines for helping new readers and math learners. Lots of examples, frequently asked questions and suggestions.

  • Write course learning outcomes - Course learning outcomes explain what students will be able to do by the end of the course. Use active verbs such as describe, identify, analyze, create, build, apply, design.
  • Create modules for the course - Use modules to sequence your course into a logical flow of topics.



Decimals, fractions and percents
Are you still working on decimals, fractions and percents? I could use help from the kids to find some good online resources - explanations, examples, web based games. It would be great to have the kids say why these are good resources - like the presentation style, clear explanations, great practice activities, nice example of why this is important. At that rate, writing down a six word sentence can take up to nine minutes. Even five and six year olds who are unfamiliar with keyboards can compose more quickly and easily on computers than by hand (Wetzel, 1985).
