Engineering and Applied Science @ MOAS

We have a great resource nearby - the Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences (MOAS). This broad focus of the museum on arts and sciences is ideal to blend collections and displays of Engineering, also known as "applied science". Looking through the galleries, there is an engineering connection between artifacts displayed as art that have a function, purpose and/or some practical application to culture and community.

  • NASA and the space program - Although the NASA accomplishments are frequently promoted as great science, they are first and foremost engineering accomplishments. Much of scientific research has be made possible through engineering. Scientists come up with great theories about time, space and the universe. They work with engineers to devise equipment and instrumentation to measure and test their theories. Some discoveries have had to wait until the engineering and technology advance to provide the sensitivity and definition necessary for these predictions.

  • Cuban exhibit. There is a scale model of a sugar processing factory. This elaborate model includes all the elaborate piping necessary for the process. This was how complex manufacturing plants were designed prior to computer-aided design. All elements of the process were included in the model. When everyone was satisfied that the process had been adequately modeled and all the major components fitted together, they built the actual factory with all the processing. Thousands of hours of work went into the model.

  • Visible storeroom - displays hundreds of items from the Museum's collection that are not formally displayed in the galleries. This is a great collection of artifacts that show the diversity of cultural and household items over time and space. There are examples of early settles effects, items brought to Florida from other parts of the United States and Europe, illustrating the craftsmanship of the people of the times.

  • The [/Root%20Collection Root Collection] - includes a vast array of glass bottles manufactured in the late 800s band early 1900s including the iconic Coca Cola bottles. The design problem was spelled out for those wishing to present submissions to the design competition. The bottle had to be ...

Design process (engineering - there are many variations on the design process. They generally include identifying the problem, coming up with lots of ideas, selecting something to try, planning and building, testing, refining and improving on all requirements within project constraints - time, cost resources.

North Wing

  • Maps / Cartography - many historic maps in the MOAS collection. From Europe, Asia, South America, and the United States, examples from over 500 years of mapmaking are included showing mankind's long desire to chart "a sense of place" for itself on the planet. The Babylonians drew maps on clay tablets, some dated to around 2300 BC. Today we use GPS and Google Maps as computers and satellite imaging have made mapping more accurate than ever.

  • Visible Storage Building - addresses the challenge of organizing a public exhibition space while fulfilling the traditional purpose of safely housing a section of the Museum’s collections in a climate-controlled and easily accessible environment.

  • Arts in America: 1700- 1900 - collection of furniture, paintings, watercolors, drawings, and decorative arts including silver and glass. The gallery is interpreted chronologically with emphasis on the Pilgrim Century, the Eighteenth Century and the American Victorian Period.

  • International Decorative Arts - 18th and 19th century silver, gold, furniture, mirrors, and other art objects.

  • Gallery of Chinese Art - pieces of Chinese art representing thousands of years of Chinese history
