1. Introductions

Online Comunity Service [7 Cups] I chose 7 cups as the online community services to share as you can volunteer to be a listener, listening to people discuss their problems on the form you choose to work on. A few forms are depression, anxiety, and bipolar. To me, this is the best resource of mine for this topic.

[Volunteer match] is another great online volunteer work source that would help you find a place to volunteer that better matches you so you can help others. Ive listed this link also so that if lending a listening ear isnt to your liking the site volunteer match can help you find another thing to volunteer, whether its online or in person.

2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

[3] This article highlights the recent struggles and cases between free speech and censorship regarding online platforms. It asks the question of whether online spaces like Facebook and other social media sites should be restricted by the first amendment. While courts in recent times have ruled these sites to be a public space these sites are still private companies and it seems unlikely they will be subject to freedom of speech. Currently these companies can still censor their own platforms even though it feels that they have grown to be an extension of our speech. However the article also argues that maybe online speech should be censored as it seems hate speech has grown online very quickly over the past few years.

[4] Privacy is being increasingly harder to protect online. To survive in our current world and economy you have to create "data" which is collected by companies and businesses. With this is mind, should we accept that some private information is bound to be shared and instead embrace it to receive better products and services in return?

3. Intellectual Property

Intellectual Property Keywords: Copyright

https://www.wired.co.uk/article/what-is-article-13-article-11-european-directive-on-copyright-explained-meme-ban

We chose this resource since it talks of one of the biggest changes happening in the EU in regards to copyright. This bill changes what many people will be able to say and do on sites like YouTube and Twitter, limiting what many people see as their freedom on the internet. Those familiar with the internet and active on it see this as a threat to what makes the internet so special. It might be sad to say, but the days of a ungoverned internet might be gone forever, and we might be entering a new age where the internet becomes another service governments can use to control their citizens.

Arts and Computers

https://www.artsy.net/news/artsy-editorial-elon-musk-fire-refusing-credit-artist

The internet has allowed many people to become artists by allowing them to have places where they can post their creations. Now more than ever, art is much more feasible thanks to the amount of exposure one can get through the internet. Not only that, but they can now digitize and multiply their art to make it reachable and seen to thousands, maybe millions. The above article talks of Elon Musk and has negligence to give artists their proper credit, especially when they rely on exposure to get their name out there and make money.

4. Crime

Computers and Crime

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1905.08233.pdf

The internet and computers have spawned so many great advances and services that have made life so much easier. However, there have been many things that have been created that pose great threat to security, one of those things being, Deepfakes. Deepfakes have the potential to be extremely problematic, allowing for almost anybody to edit a video and apply the face of whoever they want to any video. The implications this has is scary to think about. Many people can be shown doing things they never really did, and the public would have a really hard time figuring out the real and the fake.

Hacked -now what? [5]] If subject to a cyber crime you should know that "hackers often try to create accounts" with your identities like your email so you should check your accounts for possible random account verification emails and then delete them. Also, there are precautions you should take to make sure you stay safe like changing your passwords.

5. Employment, Education and Entertainment

[6] This link details the controversy of humans and robots replacing humans. We have some things to think about as we enter the robotic age.

Games in Education [7] (Links to an external site.) In Activate, you campaign for one of the four issues they give you in the beginning of the game. You keep doing activities until your movement becomes national. I think kids would learn something from it because it's easy to play and the game doesn't last too long.

6. Midterm - Grand Challenges

Grand Challenges [8] The problem of plastic in our world is big and serious. I am curious what the world will look like if we continue this trend. Also, with plastic so prevalent in technology, how will we properly dispose of the waste?

Challenge Solutions and Technology [9] Remote health monitoring is important because health can be monitored whenever and wherever. A monitoring device with a sensor measures data, and can help people with heart conditions and diabetes. Apps that monitor health are becoming increasingly popular.

7. Evaluating and Controlling Technology

Internet of Things [[10]] The internet of things is a concept to connect all existing devices in households, offices, education to the internet. The argument against the IoT is revolves around data privacy. Regular citizens should not fear their daily activity on the internet so it should not cause them trouble. Therefore efforts to incorporate a connected ecosystem of devices will help evolve society to have reliable technology to depend as it will be integrated into an environment that focuses on efficiency and optimization to the advantage of users.

Great Technologies [[11]] Octave is a free open source version of MATLAB which is a glorified calculator program. This programming language is simple to learn and efficiently helps complete homework assignments by saving variables and not working with a calculator and having to scroll on the small screen. Saving scripts with this program makes redoing homework much more efficient and helps you learn concepts much more easily by foregoing the simple mistakes that come with hand calculations.

8. Risks, Failures and Responsibilities

Keywords, Reliability [accendoreliability.com] This article goes over what reliability is and why there is no long term reliability as most stuff are created and put on the market right away and not tested to see how long it lasts. Leaving room for computer or technology to have things like mechanism malfunctions.

!1

BioTech and its related siences have gained much traction over the last couple of years especially as they have been at the forefront of innovation. BioTech, as it grows, will only further its ability to help those using computers. Access to data that can be life-changing is coming quicker and better, and people are getting the help they need faster than ever due to computers.

Medicine and Computers [1] This article talks about how most of our medical information and files are all on computes now. This poses the threat of our medical records getting out if the systems were hacked, which a big deal for most. I have already had issues where some of my records were already lost multiple times.

9. Anytime, Anywhere

Anytime, Anywhere Keywords [12] This article talks about the rising popularity of mobile gaming. It gives 5 clear reasons why mobile gaming is rising and how come it has become so popular.

[13] This article explains video game addiction, more specifically detailing mobile gaming. It defines video game addiction, mobile gaming's contribution, psychology of game addiction, and where and how to get help. The article backs up its claims well with statistics and explains the basic rundown of video game addiction without demonizing games or gaming itself.

10. Technology Advances, Social Trends

Future of Computers [[14]] Project xCloud by Microsoft will be a "video game streaming service, allowing players to instantly stream console and PC games to their device of choice using an internet connection". This follows the rising trend of subscription based media and content, with the popularity of Netflix, Hulu, and the new Disney+ the gaming industry is now dipping its toes into this market and hopes to gain a huge following.

What's new and Important? [[15] Li-Fi is an innovative idea that provides a new method of distributing internet access by use of LED. As the infrastructure and building industry evolves to harvest more daylighting in buildings and becomes less reliant on artificial lighting this innovation will be able to take advantage of these natural light opportunities. Lighting is a dependable source of energy and if this technology were to take off the applicability of this idea would allow for more secure networking in specified areas.
