My Profile

I'm an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've been teaching for thirty years.
When I got to know about this workshop I certainly had many reasons for joining in. First of all, I'm very interested in wikis: I sometimes feel they can free us from the physical limitations of paper. But most of all, it's the collaborative possibility of wikis what I find really appealing.
I also like the project. The idea of receiving training in exchange for free resources is great.
However, what pushed me into registering was the list of participants. So many people from different parts of the world. So many countries I know little about.
I hope to learn about wikis and to open my perception of the world. I also hope I can make useful contributions.

Professional Background

Last year I started to introduce technology to my classes.
I opened a blog, Take it Further, to write posts for my students. I write about classroom situations, provide links to further reading and they write comments. I was amazed at my first reaction to their comments: I loved their mistakes!
I started to ask myself too many questions, I had so many mixed up ideas that I thought writing about my experience could be a way to get organized.
I started another blog, Andamiada, (Scaffold, in English). I decided to write in Spanish to be in contact with other Argentine teachers. Second amazement: people read and commented what I wrote.
I thought that my students could also live the experience of having an audience and receiving feedback from real readers, not just teachers. They started blogging in Taking it Further. A couple of them have even posted during the holidays!
This is what one of my students (12 years old) wrote when the classes were over:

Hi everybody!
Classes are over, but we learned a lot and we had fun. Thanks to all and our teacher Gabriela specially.
But I'll continue posting on the blog.
Hope all are OK. Bye!

And she did. I had to make the decision of starting another blog in English, Reveal Ties when I registered for a SMiELT workshop.

  • Great to see you in the tutorial, Gabriela, and to see your user page. Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?--Phil Bartle 22:50, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
