Open question

An open question is a question that allows for an endless infinite number of answers:

  • What is your opinion on open source software?
  • Why do you wear a red cap?
  • Would you mind to tell me your personal history?
  • Could you explain the making of bread?

A closed question only has a limited number of answers:

  • Where do you live?
  • How old are you?
  • What is your name?
  • How many children are in your classroom?
  • Do you like peanut butter?
  • Are you afraid of bears?

Use of open questions

If you want to talk, try to use a lot of open questions, for people will tell a story if you ask the right open question. A closed question is not a problem, but most people just answer the question and become silent again.
