View video series – Dr. Rusty Waller, a professor at Texas A&M University Commerce, discusses social metacognition in context of Self-Concept and Personal Growth [10.26 min.], Building Self-Esteem and Self-Worth [14.55 min.], and Building Resilience [12:09 min.] These three video lectures progressively build on concepts and skills so it’s best to watch them in the order they are presented. To enhance their learning value, consider how the concepts presented are reflected in your own life.

In the first video, Dr. Waller discusses how self-concept, or the way we see ourselves, can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies of personal success or failure.

In the third video, he discusses ways to develop resilience, or the ability to overcome difficult life events. These include effective communication, problem-solving, emotional self-management, and relationship skills, as well as metacognitive strategies. Resilience is important for business communicators because their positions can lead to public and internal misunderstanding, criticism and even failure.
