View video – Audencia Business School’s TEDx presentation The survivor's guide to cross-cultural communication. [35:22 min.] The speakers, Beatrice Du Menils, MBA, and Dr. Christine Naschberger, use Hall’s iceberg metaphor to illustrate the differences between surface and deeper aspects of culture, identify common intercultural communication barriers in different traditions, attitudes, and usages of the same language. They illustrate cultural communication differences with brief, interesting decoding exercises, and discuss culture shock recovery strategies, which include empathy, openness, flexibility. In closing, they give an overview of global business needs for particular intercultural competencies, which highlight relationship building skills.

Note: There is a ‘skip’ in the video between 29:41 and 31:21, where information on dual cultures and reverse culture shock is repeated.
