The ava ceremony is the most important official welcoming ceremony in Samoan tradition. It involves orator chiefs publicly vying between each other for the honour to give the official speech to welcome visitors. An orator of the visiting party will give a speech in return before the ava is drunk, made from the roots of the ava plant (Piper methysticum). The ava is commonly known as kava.
