My profile

Hello! I'm Yamini Panchaksharam from India. I am a Tamilian by origin, but born and brought up in North India. Delhi and Gurgaon (my present residence) are the cities where I grew up; and the year 2009 marks the 20th year since we moved into Delhi!

I completed my Bachelor's degree in Zoology from Gargi College (University of Delhi) followed by a Master's degree in Natural Resources Management from TERI University. After graduating from TERI, I have been working as a Project Officer with the Freshwater & Wetlands Programme at the World Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF-India) since June 2007. The experience here has been one of a kind and has given me an opportunity to visit some of India's unique freshwater habitats such as the Ganges (in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh), the River Chambal, and lakes Tsomoriri and Tsokar in Ladakh.

Given the immense scope of research in freshwater habitats in India, I plan to return to academics in a short while from now and focus on water science-related issues. In the long run, I would like to be associated with a research organization/ NGO and a University, so that I will have the opportunity to conduct field research (in water science) as well as communicate my research findings to students.

My College

I was enrolled as a student of B.Sc. (H) Zoology at Gargi College (University of Delhi) from 2002-2005. [1] Following this, I enrolled in the M.Sc. Natural Resources Management programme at TERI University from 2005-2007. What a roller coaster ride it's been! [2]

My interests

My work at WWF-India [3]involves preparation of information sheets on Ramsar wetlands (RIS) for selected wetlands of Uttar Pradesh, India and in coordinating work among field offices and the Delhi office for the High Altitude Wetlands conservation project. Also, during my tenure here, I have helped edit certain publications. My academic and work experience has led to my interest in the study and application of quantitative and qualitative aspects of water science. I want to learn how community-based watershed and waste water management systems can help maintain a water body’s optimal conditions. Also, I would like to study the hydrological regime impact on faunal species.

How I became a Wikieducator

Thanks to Dr. Gita Mathur, my Botany teacher and mentor at Gargi College, I got to know about the WikiEducator portal and online course. To be given the opportunity to teach is an honour and an immense responsibility. I look forward to participating in the course, contributing to the site and working on my page!

Learning Resource I intend to develop

There have been ever so many occasions when I've been asked to remind someone about a certain character from a book or movie; and at times to give a quick summary of the story itself! If I have read the book or watched the movie, I have answered the questions effortlessly. On the other hand, if someone asks me an academic/ technical question (especially regarding a subject where I haven't done any project work), I am able to give a brief explanation but invariably with the tagline,'Let me refer to the text and get back to you with all the details.'

During my Master's coursework, I remember drawing stick figures and weaving a story around a few topics in the Biodiversity Conservation module. Frankly speaking, tackling exam questions pertaining to those topics was much easier. I even surprised myself by writing more than I intended to initially!

So, what I plan to do here in Wiki is to present environmental issues in the form of stories (with related illustrations/ pictures) that will be relevant to different age groups. For instance,

• younger students will get an idea about the issue by simply reading the story and referring to the definitions section,
• high school and college students can learn more about some topics by referring to the external links I will be inserting within the story as well as the reading section (which will include technical reports, research papers and online articles)

I would like to add that though the stories will be based on facts, the actual sequence of events and names of people and places mentioned will be fictitious.

This will involve plenty of reading and learning for me as well! So, happy reading, hope you find the stories interesting and as always I welcome your suggestions!
