Introducing Girls to Engineering Workshop (IGEW) Grades 3-6

UBC GirlSmarts - Grade 6

  • Robotics - Do you wish you had a robot friend like Wall-e? Now is your chance to program your own! We’ll be programming robots to sense their environment and follow our instructions. Make a robot do exactly what you tell it to!


  • Human-Computer Interaction - How easy is it to learn to use a new TV remote? Think about using everyday things that you find frustrating. What would you change if you were designing it yourself? Learn what designers do to make products like an iPad easy to use.


  • Programming - Have you ever wondered how computer games actually work? Ever wished you could make a game like Angry Birds? Now is your chance to program your own interactive game!


  • HTML and the Internet - How does Facebook work? Could you and your friends build your own website? What kind would you make? Start thinking of ideas, because we’re going to teach you everything you need to know to build a website from scratch!



UBC - GirlSmarts Grade 7

  • Programming - Have you ever wondered how computer games and programs are created? In the Programming activity you learn what a ‘programming language’ is, and how to create your own computer program.


  • Music and Technology - Do you like listening to music and making songs with your friends? Do you know some of the most popular music is made using technology and computers? During the Music and Technology activity you have fun finding ways you can use technologies to make music.


  • Social Gaming - Do you play Candy Crush or use Snapchat to interact with friends? In the Social Gaming activity you unleash your imagination as you uncover the world technology used to create interactive games.


  • User Experience and User Interface - Do you know why you like some apps more than others? Are you curious about why the Instagram homepage is so cool? In the User Experience and User Interface activity, you use your creativity and learn how design influences technology.



2014.07.25 - SWE collegiate outreach events grants applications

  • Liquid nitrogen ice cream used molecular gastronomy (a new, chemically based form of cooking) to create vanilla “Dippin Dots,” or small spheres of ice cream. We discussed phases and phase changes, as well as chemical engineering safety and chemical engineering in our world.
  • electrochemical kitchen, girls experimented with electricity from fruits and vegetables, testing circuitry using potatoes, lemons and apples. They also attempted to light up pickles using these fruits. Topics discussed in the activity included electrochemistry and alternative energy.
  • biotechnology, the strawberry DNA station allowed girls to extract DNA from strawberries, peas and their own spit. Girls learned about how DNA is present in all organisms and were able to compare the DNA from various sources. They also discussed DNA stability, applications in biotech, and lab techniques. This activity was also widely liked and well received, and the girls loved that they got to take home their own test tube of DNA.
  • production line. Girls were divided into teams and assigned roles on their production team. These roles included manager, packaging engineer, and food safety consultant. The teams were then tasked with following food safety requirements, such as wearing gloves and contamination protection, while reaching a quota of pudding cups. Teams worked together to mix and package the pudding, while the “FDA” inspected their lines for compliance and “Upper Management” inspected for teamwork. In this station, girls not only learned about packaging engineering and production

  • Bridge Building - short PowerPoint to the girls on some statics basics and how theories (and trusses/triangles) can apply to sturdy bridges. Then, we gave the girls toothpicks and small/large marshmallows and asked them to create the most effective bridges they could think of. We had a completed example at the front of the room that the girls were able to look at for inspiration.
  • code their own website, allowing them to access these pages on their own at home
  • Robotic Arm activity, where the girls used cardboard strips, string, straws, and fasteners to create structures similar to human arms
  • Newspaper Table - assemble their newspaper and duct tape in such a manner that their tables could withstand the weight of a textbook.
  • made their own lip gloss using Vaseline and Crystal Light lemonade powder.
  • Electronic Matching Game, a SWE AfterSchool Agilent Kit, where girls learned about circuits.



  • Paper Table activity in which the girls aimed to design a support structure able to hold a textbook of one of the notorious engineering classes
  • Catapult Activity in which the girls aimed to design an accurate catapult device that could propel goldfish pieces to other members of their group. They had a lot of fun with this one as colored goldfish soared in the air, many of the participants recording their test runs

Activities

  • Stranded on an Island - Girls were given a list of items they had for survival on a boat with them. Unfortunately, the boat was sinking and they had to decide which items to toss overboard. * Team work as girls had to agree on what they thought was important, and problem solving because they had to think about different ways they could use an item.


  • Inventor Activity - Girls thought of at least 10 ways to solve a basic task then at least 3 improvements for an object used every day. * Problem solving and creative thinking. The girls had to think of items and tasks in different ways and get creative with their results to get the requested amount of modifications.


  • Pinwheel - We made pinwheels out of pencils, paper, plastic beads and straight pins. * To look past the typical uses objects can be used for and come up with different uses.


  • Candy Fishing - The girls were put into teams and given a ruler, a piece of construction paper, one foot of tape, two rubber bands and three paper clips. They built fishing rods to collect candy off of the floor in the fishing hole which was designate by a large square on the floor made out of masking tape. * As the game went on girls could use the points they earned from the candy they Teamwork as each girl had her own idea, but there was only one set of supplies. Recourse management, there were so many points they could spend so they had to buy what they absolutely needed. collected to buy more materials from the store.


  • Paper Copter - Paper copters were made by taking a strip of paper, cutting part way down the middle and folding those wings opposite directions. Then the bottom half that was left uncut was then folded in half to create a base. * After the copters were thrown from the top of the stairs a couple times we challenged them to make adjustments so they would spin faster or slower. They could do that by adding or removing paper clips, or by folding the wings.


  • What is Engineering? - SWE volunteers talked about the different disciplines of engineering and then the girls were given pictures of everyday situations and had to pick out which types of engineers were involved. * Knowledge of what engineering is as most of the girls didn’t know what an engineer actually does, also awareness of how prominent engineers are in everyday life.


  • Marshmallow Tower - The girls were given marshmallows and toothpicks and had to make the tallest tower that would survive the earthquake test which was shaking the table for 10 seconds. * Team work, the girls could have worked separate but it was to their advantage to work together to build together as they had a set amount of supplies. Because the supplies were limited it was an example of working under less than ideal conditions and thinking of creative ways to make it work. It was also an introduction to stress, strain and basic construction principles.


  • Block Activity - Girls were split into partners and told to sit back to back. They were then given an identical set of colored blocks and one girl was given a picture. They took turns describing block formations in the picture, or the older girls took turns describing block formations they created themselves, as the girl who was building couldn’t see the picture.

influence

  • thinking in ways that unfortunately girls often aren’t encouraged to think. It’s a bizarre phenomenon but it never occurs to some of them that they can program a computer or build a robot. They may think it’s a masculine thing. It’s the same with video games. This isn’t something girls tend to continue investing themselves in past age six because there aren’t many video games that appeal to girls in a general way.
