What is Linux?

  • Linux is an operatingsystem for computers.
  • Designed by Linus Torvalds in 1991
  • It is freely available for everyone and everyone is allowed to modify it. This kind of software is called Open Source.
  • Linux – also named GNU/Linux – is distributed as part of Linux-distributions, also named distro's.

GNU

  • GNU was launched in 1984 by Richard Stallman. A project aiming to create a completely free operating system for computers.
  • (Parts of) the GNU-operatingsystem are nowdays being used in the operatingsystem usualy called Linux, and to which the FSF (Free Software Foundation) reffers as GNU/Linux
