My profile
Greetings! My name is Kathleen Stone. I am a Coordinator of Curriculum and Instructional Design at SUNY Empire State College's Center for Distance Learning. I primarily work with the Science, Math, and Technology area of study on course revisions and new course development. I participate on the Learning Resources taskforce at the college. As part of the taskforce I am currently taking David Wiley's "Introduction to Openness in Education" open course. I also teach adjunct in the side. Currently I am teaching Geology and the Environment online. Just so that I ensure I have no free time, I am a doctoral student working on my Ed.D in Higher Education and Adult Learning.
Professional background
I am fairly new at SUNY Empire State College. I started in September 2011. Prior to coming to Empire I spent 8 years at a Clinton Community Collge (CCC), another SUNY institution. At CCC I held a variety of positions over the 8 years. I started as a tutor for math and science and moved on to teaching math and earth science courses as an adjunct. During that time I was able to develop and teach Geology and Meteorology as hybrid courses using the ANGEL platform. In total I have taught 10 courses at CCC including:

After completing my Masters degree in Adult Education I was lucky to get into the continuing education office at CCC full-time where I worked as a Coordinator of Community and Workforce Development. I coordinated community workshops, professional certification programs, and some workforce contract training. During this time I completed my certification through LERN (Learning Resource Network) to become a Certified Program Planner (CPP). I have also taught geology labs as an adjunct at Plattsburgh State University and worked as a consultant for Cambridge Educational Services on the math portions of their SAT and GRE test prep courses.
Education
I am currently a doctoral student working towards my Ed.D. in Higher Education and Adult Learning at Walden University.I began my education as an adult student at a community college when I was 25 years old and earned my Associates of Science degree in Math/Science at Clinton Community College. I then transfered to Plattsburgh State University where I completed my Bachelors of Science degree in Geology. There I completed original research on Apatite Fission track dating and presented at the annual GSA conference. I completed my Masters of Science degree in Adult Education at Buffalo State University where I focused on using inquiry based teaching methods in geology courses.
My interests
Professional
I am interested in adult learning theories and how they apply to online learning and instructional design. I tend to be drawn to social-constructivism and transformative learning. I also have a growing desire to understand the relationship between open education and adult learning.
Personal

I do not have much personal time at this point in life, but when I have a moment I am a science fiction fan. I enjoy reading, watching movies, and TV shows that have a sci-fi or fantasy theme. I also love to spend time with my family doing just about anything. I have been married almost 18 years and have a 16 year old son and 11 year old daughter. My husband has a wonderful sense of humor that my kids have inherited. It's a blast to watch them grow and I cherish the journey.
One of my favorite things to do when life is extremely crazy and busy is to take a few moments to pull it back into perspective and spend a few minutes watching Carl Sagan talk about The Pale Blue Dot. There are many versions of this speech out there, but this is by far my favorite. |

| Brief description of project |
Working with Audeliz Matias from Empire State College, we will be developing a mini interactive course on scientific method that can be used in any science course to provide college level background on "how to do" science. |
| Target date for completion |
We will work on this project as time allows since we will be involved in a rather massive transition to Moodle very soon. The goal is to have it completed within 12 months (Feb 2013). |
