My Profile

I am Verbena Wilburg, from Guyana. I am presently a lecturer in Spanish Methodology at the Cyril Potter College of Education, our local teacher-training institution. Six years ago I retired from the Ministry of Education where I held the position of School Inspector, Modern Languages. i enjoy what I am doing since I always preferred interacting with learners, an element that is missing from administrative positions. Since my introduction to web 2.0 tools via an OAS workshop, I have become hopelessly addicted to them. I have set up a website and blog site and used them to work with a group of my students. The enthusiasm and interest generated was amazing. I am looking forward to this opportunity to increasing my knowledge in the area of integrating technology into teaching.

Professional Background

I have been an educator (Teacher, Administrator, Inspector)for the beter part of forty years. The greatr part of my professional life has been spent in teacher-centred classrooms, with static rows and dry, word-filled texts. How bore my long-suffering students must have been!!!

This shift towards a more student-centred approach makes adds richness and dynamism to the learning process. Now I realize that those students who were taught through traditional modes were stifled and deprived of opportunities to express themselves in ways that would havae drawn upon their unique capabilities. They were forced to conform to the mould outlined by he person in absolute control - the teacher

In my effort to encourage my teaacher-trainees to become more engaged with lesson content, I have been using Google Teaching Apps, Wordpress, Haiku LMS, Glogster, Voicethread, Polldaddy, Wordle and Prezi. We have been using tracks (Trackstar4teachers) and they have done several online quizes using Zoho Challenge and proprofs.com.

Sad to say, some are reluctant to venture out, preferring the safety and relative annonymity of the traditional classroom. Add to his the fact that we do not have connecivity so many of hem have to pay a fee a internet cafes to get the work done. However, the majority have embraced the opportunity to play a more acive role in their learning, despite the cost.

Our college has several centres spread all over the country and a lot of thought is being given to e-learning. I believe that the wiki editing skills acquired through this programme will prove to be an invaluable asset, especially with regard to creating OE resources. Thanks for creaing the opportunity

My Reflection

Participating in this exercise was clearly a sensible decision. Even at this early stage I have been provided with much food for thought - the concept of OER, benefits and concerns. I have been introduced to new sites - wilkbooks, wictionary, wikiquotes. I have already provided colleagues with the relevant links. I have a good feeling about this course

Making progress. Participated in an extremely informative session on wiziq.com on Sun night. Want to try out the application at College, particularly since we have several out-of-town centres. A situation where a tutor from the main centre can share information with students at another centre, perhaps in a subject area where there is no lecturer, comes to mind. Of course, I am assuming that there is connectivity

Have just added a link to my country page at the end of my user page.

This experience has been invaluable. I must admit though, that I am not current with my assignments. For me, it is just not possible to complete each day's tutorials in the time estimated. As I work through the programme I keep wondering about ways to make use of this knowledge in my professional activities.

I am taking another shot at this programme. I intend to finish it this time around.

(Comment.gif: Dear Verbena. Well done. You have made great progress. With a little bit more practice you will become a skilled WikiMaster soon. I have moved the content under your Sandbox into your Sandbox, because this is where your practise area is, and also to keep your front page look clean. I have now certified you.
