My Interests

My hobbies have been many and varied over the years and currently include singing (in a choir), stone carving, computer-related activities and guitar. The new dog could be considered of my interests too as he takes his share of my spare time and gets me out walking.
Past pursuits include violin, piano, hockey, badminton, scuba diving, tennis and orienteering.

My passions:
Using digital technologies and Web 2.0 resources to create resources and support learning programmes
Engaging the disengaged - especially the boys whose needs are not being met by the education system
Feeding and challenging gifted students
Student-centred/Personalised learning - finding hooks and pursuing tangents
Being a learner and trying new things

My professional heroes:
Carolyn Stuart - my principal, who transformed our school and rekindled my passion for teaching,
Sir Ken Robinson - I love his address on creativity!
Derek Wenmoth on Derek's Blog
Joan Dalton and David Anderson - inspirational!

Quotes (from Albert Einstein)

  1. The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
  2. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
  3. It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.
  4. Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
  5. If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?
  6. Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.
  7. Only a life lived for others is a life worth while.
  8. The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once.

My Projects

Enterprise is my first attempt at a teaching resource on Wikispaces. It was to support the immersion stage of our unit.

We use Ultranet as our Learning Management System to support our teaching and learning programmes. I am currently using it to create pages that bring gifted students from across the school together.
