About me

My name is Grace Muwanga, a lecturer at Mbarara University in Uganda. This University is one of the few public universities, but there are several private universities as well. Uganda is found in East Africa, and Mbarara University is located in the Southwestern part of the country, about 260km from the capital city (Kampala) by road.
The university is 20 years old now, having opened its doors in 1999. It started as a medical school, but other disciplines have since been added, including Faculty of Science and Faculty of Development Studies. So, compared to other universities in Uganda and elsewhere, Mbarara University is still comparatively a small university, where all students tend to know each other, if not by name, at least by face.

My Work Interests

I am greatly interested in using technology for teaching and student learning, especially by harnessing the power of computing to do a lot of things. Presently our internet connectivity is not so great, being quite slow most of the times (except at night or over weekends when internet user ‘traffic’ is not so high! – the expensive broadband has condemned us to low bandwidth which we barely managed to pay for).
Presently, we do not use any Learning Management System platform and, although Moodle is a free LMS, we have never tried to use it because of lack of a proper computer networking arrangement on campus. But the situation is soon changing, because fiber optic cables interconnecting all buildings on campus have been laid, and we hope that we will soon have a working intranet. Also, the much awaited fibre optic cable has landed at Mombasa (Kenya), and it is hoped that cost of broadband will dramatically go down (at least for the countries that will access this cable!).

My Professional Development Interests

I would like to learn how to develop content for on-line teaching/learning materials. In particular, learning how to use wikis will be a great boost for my professional development interests.

  • My Educational Resources

Nontheless, I am still able to obtain lots of images from the internet which I use for teaching, and provide the same images to students for their own use (I teach anatomy to students who offer health-related disciplines). Other resources from the internet a free-learning materials provided by various websites. However, I am greatly interested in developing good online teaching/learning materials to be posted on our intranet once it is up and running.

Notes from Facilitators and WikiNeighbours

Hi Grace, As this workshop is nearing its end now, could you decide on developing at least one free content resource licensed under a CC-BY-SA or CC-BY license which can be used by yourself (and others) on WikiEducator? With best wishes, Ramesh Sharma 16:10, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Hello Grace, please update your userpage. You may like to add some photo of your work too! all the best,--R C Sharma, PhD 17:57, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Grace, It's lovely to meet another African here. In July my husband and I drove 13000 km through 7 beautiful African countries but sadly we didn't get as far as Uganda. Perhaps next time. Our common interest is integrating ICT into our teaching and learning. We in SA are also anticipating better broadband with the new undersea cable. Progress! Enjoy the rest of the workshop. Regards Brenda Hallowes
