I would like to congratulate each of you to start the Indian chapter of WE, this can be milestone in the history of Indian education system. As I am reading the complete thread here, I really like the ideas proposed by Patricia, I am also playing with the same ideas from last few years, but never able to give them a shape due to lack of time as well as due to absence of a platform like WE in India.
In a country like India, where we have approx 32 different education boards and thousands of schools connected to them resulting millions of students with different backgrounds, languages, social structure. In my last few years of professional career, I have come across with thousands of IT professionals in India coming from different backgrounds and with different skills, but sadly most of the students, who just passed out from schools are not well equipped with the basic knowledge of IT.
I consider myself fortunate enough that I got access of computers when I am only 14 and will always be thankful to my teacher, who taught me things which never implemented in course at our times.One of the basic problems with current system, that each of our board has a different course content for the IT in schools connected to them and most of the time, this course contents mainly based on proprietary systems. I have also noticed that most of the time, the course content is based on the books available in the market by the different publishers rather than books should be based on the course content.
In my opinion, we should start a project in Indian chapter to completely overhaul the IT education at school levels and we should also develop and publish the content in WE Indian chapter, I know this is a mammoth task, but believe me, it’s something which can be done easily also if we utilize our resources at national and international level. Here are some of the the first thoughts:
Project Name: IT Education IN India
Summary: This project will design and develop the course and its contents for IT education in Indian schools. This project will contains different modules to create different types talent pool In IT and also help children to adopt IT applications in their daily life from their childhood.
Target Audience: Students from Class VIth to Class XIIth
Age Group: 10-16 Years of Age
Phase 1: Designing and developing the content for Class VIth Students *Module 1: Designing the course curriculum
- Module 2: Development of course content based on the course curriculum (English and Hindi language)
**Text based content **Video Simulations (Demo mode and practice mode) with or without audio commentary
- Module 3: Publishing the content on WE
- Module 3: Translation of the course content into regional languages
**Translation of Text based content **Translation of Video Simulations (Demo mode and practice mode) with or without audio commentary
From my experience in both IT and publishing industry, i am always full of ideas for such projects, will share more next time, I would also like to discuss and explain the real problems and situations in any of the next WE workshop.

Thanks a lot for sharing this development and I congratulate you, Dr. Savithri Singh, Dr. Pankaj Khare and Dr. Sreedher for taking this initiative.
Your idea to discuss the priorities of India Chapter is a good one too. You and Dr. Singh have been members of our various events related to agriculture and WE all along. I would appreciate that you and the members include among others developing contextually relevant content for agriculture at different levels for education, extension and research and with particular emphasis on local language content for farmers. As we have initiated in Sri Lanka and in India, farmers should be members of such content development.

Dear Anil Ji,
I cannot command those that came up with the idea enough and it will be huge task given India's size and the many different priorities, but it is an exciting undertaking that gets my mind going.
It would like to suggest to also have a place where to input all those areas of interest on WikiEducator directly. People could list their ideas, so we have an open and transparent forum to work from.
Following Krishna's suggestion below, for instance, it could be divided into subject areas:
Suggested Focus Areas:
a) Different levels for education, extension and research and with particular emphasis on local language content for farmers.
I would also like to add
b) Technical and Vocational Education and Training
c) ICT/eLearning for Development
I will try to answer your question, what should be the priorities of an Indian WE Chapter. I am going to aim really high and say:
1. To help ensure that a high quality education using the WikiEducator platform is available to as many school children in India as possible and that it is sufficient to enable those who are interested to pursue technical/vocational and/or scientific careers at all levels, as well as to provide a base for understanding by all citizens.
2. To help ensure that the educational pipelines that carry all students to careers in varies fields yield numbers of adequately educated individuals who can meet the needs of the Indian technical/vocational and/or scientific workplace using WikiEducator.
3. To help ensure that those who select a career in a technical, vocational and/or scientific discipline have available the best professional education, and that opportunities are available at the college level for interested non-specialists to broaden their technical/vocational and/or scientific backgrounds.
4. To encourage the development of a cadre of professionally educated and trained teachers to ensure excellence in school education for every student and learner. (Train the trainers, Teacher networks/support clusters by state)
5. To support informal technical/vocational and/or scientific education programs and to maintain public interest in, and awareness of, scientific and technological developments.
6. To develop and implement effective online models of high quality instructional materials that are designed for the success of all students informed by the best understanding of how students learn, and incorporate assessment as an integral component of instruction;
7. strengthen teacher competencies in WE content, pedagogy, and leadership skills, grounding their professional development in the context of school structure and organization, and developing a cadre of individuals (teachers and administrators) who can lead reform in these fields;
8. promote transitions from secondary school to higher education and to the workplace and transitions within the workplace through the development of exemplary curriculum, varied instructional environments, and other activities;
9. provide stimulating environments outside of school that increase the appreciation and understanding of science and technology by individuals of all ages, interests, and backgrounds, that support online learning within the school curriculum, and that engage parents as advocates for quality, universally available education in these fields;
10. integrate and capitalize on educational technologies and networking so as to ensure that education is more accessible, meaningful, and adaptable to varied learning styles; and
11. recognize excellence among both teachers and students in science and technology to enhance the status and visibility of the teaching profession, promote students' pursuit of scientific and technical fields, provide research experiences for teachers and students, and create networks of talented individuals who can serve as resources for others nationwide.

One of the priorities may be considered to keep a column for regional news related to WikiEducator activity in the respective language-state pages. Another regional feature can be regional talk page to discuss/invite suggestions from enthusiastic participants of L4C workshops and other online/off line programmes.
Dear Anil Prasad I am very happy to know about the 15th Nov.2008 programme. Will be there too. I think we can even think of making WikiEducator Groups, each group can then collectively get actively engaged in their group's identified areas for content development. Of course others will be free to add and edit. This may help in giving a direction to all those who are enthusiastic but not very sure about how to contribute.
