Introduction
Chilli is an important crop in Kaluthavalai village identified as the focal village under L3 Project of Sri Lanka. The farmers are experiencing several production constraints in which the diseases and pests are the most affecting factors in chilli production. Among the diseases Anthracnose disease is the most damaging in this crop and it drastically reduces the fruit quality thereby the farmers loose the economic value of the crop. Therefore, we select this disease for discussion in this document.

Anthracnose Disease in Chilli
Here is the Story. A farmer is cultivating Chilli in his field. This crop is affected by the fungal diseases. The farmer is finding difficult to differentiate the diseases. He is seeking the help of a Field Officer to identify the diseases in his field.
The Field officer is visiting the field to identify the diseases along with the farmers.

Field officer : You can observe water-soaked, sunken markings with ring structures in the chilli pods as shown in this picture. (Voice of the Field Officer)
Control measures
Farmer : “How can I overcome this disease?” (Voice of farmer)
Field Officer : You see the improved management practices here; (Voice of field officer)
- You use uninfected, clean, good quality and certified seeds or planting material.
- You mix the seeds with fungicides
- You should keep the field clean by removing diseased plants and debris
- You could plant different crops in rotation instead of planting same crop continuously.
- You should plant the crops at the correct time.
- You should plant the crops at proper spacing and should not plant very closely.
“If you follow the above said practices it is possible to reduce the incidence of this disease” (Voice of Field Officer)
Farmer : “If the infection rate is severe, can I go for chemical control?” (Voice of farmer)
Field Officer : “Yes, that is a good idea. You can go for chemical control and use the following fungicide with proper dilution rate
You dissolve 20 grams of fungicide Mancozeb 80% wp in 10 litres of water and apply to the disease plants. The plants should be fully wet with this solution of fungicide during application.
The farmer observes the condition of the crop after two weeks and found that the disease is under control.
