Course aim

The aim of this introductory course is to provide an overview of the principles and functions of management and the application of key skills management in a contemporary world.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe roles and functions of managers, where they fit into organisations and their impact on organisations and people. 
  2. Explain future trends in management, including skills needed to deal with globalisation, diversity and the increasing focus on ethical practices in business.
  3. Recognise the difference between leading and managing and apply this knowledge to the management and motivation of successful teams to foster performance, identify signs of conflicts and how to resolve them. 
  4. Establish and achieve organisational goals and objectives through the application of different management techniques to support planning and resource allocation in realising strategy in different structures.

Saylor Academy examination for OERu partners who recognise The ACE Alternative Credit Project and assessments from Saylor. While credit is not guaranteed at all schools, Saylor have partnered with a number of schools who have expressed their willingness to accept transfer of credits earned through Saylor. Pre-requisites

  • Learners whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English as indicated by a Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 on the written version; 213 on the computer version; or 79 on the Internet based version.

Micro-course structure

Learners are required to complete three micro-courses of 40 notional learning hours each for the final assessment.


Micro 1: Introduction to management

Principles of Management 101 is a free micro Open Online Course (mOOC) designed for learners who want to expand their knowledge of management. This course will help learners to:

  1. Outline the principles underlying effective management.
  2. Explain the context, both historical and present, of management principles.
  3. Connect with learners from around the world to gain broader perspectives on management around the world.

Upon successful completion of this course learners will be able to:

  1. Define the functions of managers.
  2. Define the key roles that managers fulfil.
  3. Identify where management and leadership fit into the Planning, Organising, Leading and Control framework.
  4. Describe the history of management theory to show how current theories have developed.
  5. Identify future trends in management and the associated challenges and skills managers need to deal with these changes.
  6. Analyse people-management skills.
  7. Explain the impact of globalisation on management.
  8. Delineate the major challenges of growing a business in the global environment.
