Executive Summary

The OERu partnership provides the University of Canberra with the opportunity to build a reputation as an early adopter of OER in the higher education sector; expands and widens curriculum choice for students; reinforces its commitment to social justice in education, and aligns with several strategic objectives. Further benefits include reduced long term fixed costs by sharing development costs (whilst retaining the right to reuse and adapt materials) and building OER capability within the University. Other benefits are listed at appendix 1 of this report.

The project will be overseen by the UC Open Manager (the Manager) who will ensure that synergies between the OERu project and other T&L projects are exploited, efficiencies identified, duplication of effort eliminated and that all T&L projects are designed to help the university meet its strategic objectives.

The Office of the DVCE, through Teaching and Learning, will establish an informal working group of interested faculties and individual academic staff who are interested in contributing to the open education agenda, and in contributing OERs to the OERu.

The Manager will oversee development of an approach to incorporate the open curriculum design and development philosophy of the OERu with the University curriculum design and development approach as appropriate.

Subject to other UC Open projects and staff availability, it is anticipated that the first unit will be delivered to the OERu network in 2015 and the second in 2016.

2015 Objectives

  1. Setup internal enabling governance, infrastructure and process;
  2. Develop process for OERu unit selection, design, development and assessment, including the development of a unit for OERu;
  3. Develop OERu student services and provide the OERu unit/s to the network;
  4. Plan and undertake ongoing OERu network activities.

2015 FTE contribution for OERu course nominations

As a new partner in the OERu the University of Canberra is still considering what course it may contribute in 2015. Once this has been decided it will nominate the course to support the achievement of OERu’s strategic targets and the strategic goals of the University of Canberra.
