Week One

Getting Started: Teaching & Learning Online - Why Moodle?

The design and structure of an online course is to engage students as active participants in their own learning. Blended courses, in particular, require effective combination and careful integration of course materials delivered online with activities in the face-to-face classrooms. In week one, we will discuss the basics of online teaching through relevant readings and forum interactions.

This week participants will gain theoretical and practical understanding of:

  • learning with Moodle
  • teaching and learning online
  • community of learners
  • teamwork (sandboxes).

Participants will develop a learning team charter and start collaborating in the sandboxes.

Choice Activity - Team Formation

The deadline for the choice activity (which is in the pre-course section of M4T-3 workshop) in selecting your team (sandbox) is January 4 at 11.59 PST. Those who have not made their choices will be unenrolled from M4T-3. However, everyone is welcome to join M4T-4.

Readings

The readings for this week will also cover the topic of creating a community of leaders as well as a How-to section that helps the learners customize Moodle to their individual preferences.

Activities

Activities for this week include;

  1. Team Formation - Check out the Team Formation forum in the pre-course section
  2. Sandboxes - Please enroll in the team you chose. The key is M4T-3-Team for all the teams.

    • Once the teams have filled up, the members will be made facilitators of their teams. You may change the settings, name of your sandbox/workshop, and the key after all the participants have joined.
    • Participants will be able to enroll in each others' workshops in week 4.
  3. Watch the overview of M4T-3 workshop and how to start working in the sandboxes video
  4. Create a learning team charter with the members of your team and add it as a resource in your team sandbox
  5. Start exploring the resources and activities in your sandbox as you plan the team sandboxes
  6. You are encouraged to reflect in your individual wiki throughout the workshop.

An ongoing bibliography will be provided that includes related educational sources participants can refer to throughout the workshop.

Week Two

This week participants will:

  • Explore and discus different theoretical trends and philosophical approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Complete activities that will help in developing a deeper understanding of constructivist principles of Moodle and their impact on F2F and online/blended learning and teaching.
  • Explore and apply Moodle tools (resources and activities) to the course design on the chosen topics in teams.

  1. Complete the learning activity about educational philosophies, you will need to create your own Quizlet account. It is a Web 2.0 tool that allows teachers/trainers creating study materials, study guides for students and make their learning fun. Explore and enhance your teaching!
  2. After you have studied the articles and lecture notes on Educational Philosophies and created your own Quizlet account, take a test. Hit the provided Educational Philosophies link. The access to the test is password protected. The password is "wisdom." You can also find the test through the name of the group "Teaching with Moodle Workshop." Educational Philosophies.
  3. After you have read the articles, the lecture notes about the educational philosophies and completed a Study quiz, take the self-inquiry test " Who am I as an Educator."
  4. Go to Class Wiki to participate in a collaborative activity: compiling resources on Web 2.0.
  5. Start the orientation (see WiZiQ recording) and content development process in your team sandboxes by:

getting to know one another, deciding on various roles, getting a learning team charter set up, deciding on a topic and setting up a course outline for your team, setting up activities required for the orientation process (student and instructor), and getting all the participants actively engaged.
