Manage health and safety in a tourism context

This resource is initially based on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Through this people will be able to demonstrate knowledge of risk management theory; explain the health and safety roles and responsibilities of an individual working in a tourism organisation; demonstrate knowledge of the health and safety policies and procedures of a tourism organisation; and identify, record in writing, and take action on potential risks and hazards in a tourism activity.

This unit is used in the following courses

Demonstrate knowledge of risk management theory

  • Explanation of risk management theory is in terms of its relevance to the tourism industry.

Range: must include but is not limited to – risk, hazard, peril, danger, incident, accident, crisis, causal sequence, psychological hazards, management strategies, real risk, perceived risk, absolute risk, policies and guidelines, emergency procedures.

  • Explain the health and safety roles and responsibilities of an individual working in a tourism organisation

Range: roles and responsibilities may include but are not limited to – accident prevention, personal proficiency, compliance with legislation. Explanation identifies legislative requirements relevant to the activity and environment as they apply to the employer and the employee.

  • Explanation outlines the significance of a poor health and safety record of an employer.

Range: significance may include – legal redress, costs of treatment of visitors and/or employees.

Demonstrate knowledge of the health and safety policies and procedures of a tourism organisation

  • Description of procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency are consistent with the organisation’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Description identifies the roles and responsibilities of an individual working in a tourism organisation in terms of the requirements of the organisation’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Identify, record in writing, and take action on potential risks and hazards in a tourism activity

  • Inspection of the tourism environment identifies potential hazards and risks in terms of safety of visitors, employees, and other people who may be affected.
  • Hazard management strategies are identified that minimise, isolate, or eliminate hazards.
  • The identified hazards and risks are reported according to the requirements of the organisation’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Action to eliminate or minimise the identified hazards and risks meets the requirements of the organisation’s health and safety policies and procedures, and the requirements of legislation relevant to the tourism activity and environment.
