Israel (Hebrew: יִשְׂרָאֵל Arabic: إسْرَائِيل) is a country in the Middle East (western Asia). It lies on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean between Sinai (Egypt), Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Israel was established on the 14th of May 1948 as a Jewish homeland, and today most of its citizens are Jewish, but it also has a large Arab minority. Its official languages are Hebrew and Arabic. English and Russian are the most commonly used foreign languages. Israel is a parliamentary democracy with universal suffrage for any citizen above 18 years of age who has a permanent address in Israel.
