Think about the organization of the book. Chapter 1 of the textbook details how the textbook is setup and organised. We chose this textbook because of the detail Professor Olivier includes in how and why to do these maths problems. Please take some time to consider how the book is organised.

Think about how to study for this course. Maths require practice. You may need to re-read sections as you advance to harder problems. Do all the sample and homework problems. Use the New World University forum to ask for help if you get stuck. Keep a notebook to track your progress and any questions you have.

Simplify! Maths problems can be broken into simpler steps. If you get stuck, see what you can simplify. Do an estimate with rounded numbers (see 5. Practice Estimation below).

Follow the Rules. Beyond helping you solve your arithmetic, Order of Operations helps you see how following a set of rules get you to the correct answer. Think about how a business works: following a procedure correctly may be important to keeping everything running correctly. Even if you later want to change a rule, it is important to know a rule, and to know how and why the rule works.

Practice Estimation. Whenever you are doing a business problem, think about what a reasonable answer would look like. For example, if you pay for electricity based on how many kilowatt-hours you use and the last ten bills you received were between $100 and $150, a calculation to predict next month’s bill would likely fall somewhere close to $100-$150. If you did your maths and came up with $790, would you think this is a good estimate?

Memorize important formulas. You can memorize formulas using notecards. Just add note cards as you go and flash memorize them day-to-day. Another way is to write out a sheet containing all the formulas for the class. This could be helpful in an exam, so when you come in to take the final, you just write out all of the formulas you know so that they are available to reference.
