Content and Learning

The course Embedding Literacy and Numeracy, is a level 5 elective within the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching - level 7 (GCTLT), delivered at Otago Polytechnic, Aotearoa New Zealand. The course will also form the backbone of the new Graduate Diploma which is being developed at Otago Polytechnic. It is particularly appropriate for people teaching at certificate level, who often have students with a wide range of literacy and numeracy skills.

As this is a practical course, it is important that you are able to work with adult learners over the duration of their programme or course. While you can join at any time, the tasks are best worked at in small bites over the duration of the period you work with a cohort of students, as the assessment tasks require you to assess your students’ literacy and/or numeracy skills on entry to the programme, to plan and implement teaching interventions to address these needs, to reassess students towards the end of their programme, and to reflect on the effectiveness of your teaching interventions. Face-to- face and/or Adobe connect sessions will be set up for participants. Please contact me so we can timetable these.

The course is designed to help you consolidate your existing knowledge and extend your teaching practice. On successful completion of this course you will be able to further assist your learners to develop their literacy and numeracy skills within the context of the programme you teach.

The course is based around the Learning Progressions for Adult Literacy and Numeracyand focusses on three key factors for effective teaching and learning practice; Knowing the demands, Knowing the learner and Knowing what to do. The links to these pages are found above.
