Listening and Reading Challenge Sample Answer

To check your answers or to consider reading and listening strategies that may apply to Jason, refer back to Business Communication for Success: “Chapter 3: Understanding Your Audience:” “Section 5: Listening and Reading for Understanding.”

Jason did some things correctly and others incorrectly.

The following are some examples that you might recommend to Jason for the right set of listening and reading habits:

  • Maintain eye contact with the speaker; if reading, keep your eyes on the page.
  • Don’t interrupt; if reading, don’t multitask.
  • Focus your attention on the message, not your internal monologue.
  • Restate the message in your own words and ask if you understood correctly.
  • Ask clarifying questions to communicate interest and gain insight.
