THE PREPARATION OF THE ELEMENT IODINE

Chemicals:

  1. Beaker containing about 30 g of potassium iodide (labeled “Potassium Iodide”)
  2. Beaker containing about 20 g of manganese dioxide (labeled “Manganese (IV) Oxide”)
  3. 4 dropping bottles , each with about 10 mL concentrated phosphoric acid (labeled “Phosphoric Acid”)
  4. 4 dropping bottles, each with about 20 mL of hexane (labeled “Hexane”)
  5. 2 dozen ice cubes


Equipment:

  1. bunsen burners
  2. flint strikers
  3. ring stands
  4. large rings
  5. gauze heating pads
  6. 100 mL beakers
  7. 10 mL graduated cylinders
  8. small test tubes
  9. test tube holders
  10. watch glasses to cover top of 100 mL beakers
  11. weighing boats
  12. 2 automatic balances (0.01 g)
  13. stirring rods
  14. latex gloves


NOTE: LAB REQUIRES USE OF FUME HOODS
