What are the ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of information provided by students in different environments (written material, photographs, videos, etc)?

Project lead

Associate Professor Brian Simpson, School of Law, University of New England

Overview and scope

The legal and ethical issues that arise here are important in the context of digital media. This new media creates greater ease of access but with that an increased risk that the production and dissemination of material will run foul of defamation, child protection, criminal and copyright laws, for example. As the notion of ’user created’ and ’open access’ may be integral to the use of digital media, the usual patterns of legal enforcement may also be inadequate. In that context the need to develop appropriate codes of practice and ethical guidelines seems paramount.
